Adulteration of Food:

Adulteration occurs when cheaper and lower-quality substances are mixed with food to make more money. This process makes the food impure and harmful. Adulterants are the harmful substances that are added to food. They are often not noticed because they look like real food, but they can be bad for our health. Adulterants can be poisonous or harmful. Eating adulterated food can make people sick and cause serious health problems. It makes food unsafe and unfit for eating.

Types of Food Adulteration:

  1. Removing Important Components: Some essential parts of food are removed, like the fat from milk or the natural essence from spices like cloves or cardamoms. This reduces the quality and nutrition of the food.
  2. Mixing Low-Quality or Harmful Materials: Sometimes, cheaper or inedible materials are mixed with food to increase quantity. For example, adding harmful dyes or chemicals to food to make it look fresh or colourful.
  3. Adding Harmful Substances: Dangerous materials like small stones, fine sand, iron filings, or even things like urea or sawdust are mixed with food. These substances can cause serious health problems when consumed.
