Since the plants are planted in a garden in such a way that the number of rows and the number of columns remain the same.

The next number is 32 and 322 = 1024

Hence, number to be added to 1000 to make it a perfect square

Clearly, 312 = 961<1000

322 = 1024 > 1000

∴ 1024 – 1000 = 24

Thus, the gardenerneeds 24 more plants.
