प्रश्न
A man playing a flute is able to produce notes of different frequencies. If he closes the holes near his mouth, will the pitch of the note produced, increase or decrease? Give a reason.
उत्तर १
When the holes near the month are closed, the effective length of air column increases so the pitch of sound decreases as the frequency of note produced is inversly proportional to the length of air column.
उत्तर २
When a man playing a flute closes the holes near his mouth, the length of the vibrating air column inside the flute increases. This longer air column lowers the frequency of the sound waves, which in turn lowers the pitch of the note produced. So, when he closes the holes near his mouth, the pitch of the note will decrease. This is because pitch is directly related to the frequency of the sound waves: lower frequency results in a lower pitch, and higher frequency results in a higher pitch.

The lower the frequency of vibration, the higher is the pitch.
Name the factor that determines Quality of the note
A person standing between two vertical cliffs and 480 m from the nearest cliff shouts. He hears the first echo after 3s and the second echo 2s later. Calculate:
1)The speed of sound.
2) The distance of the other cliff from the person
State one important property of waves used for echo depth sounding.
A person is standing at the seashore. An observer on the ship which is anchored in between a vertical cliff and the person on the shore fires a gun. The person on the shore hears two sounds, 2 seconds and 3 seconds after seeing the smoke of the fired gun. If the speed of sound in the air is 320 ms-1 then calculate:
1) the distance between the observer on the ship and the person on the shore.
2) the distance between the cliff and the observer on the ship.

How is loudness related to the amplitude of wave?
Two musical notes of the same pitch and same loudness are played on two different instruments. Their wave patterns are as shown in figure.
How do they differ in
(a) loudness,
(b) pitch and
(c) quality
