प्रश्न
Describe the events that took place in Sikkim from the time of India's independence to its merger with India.
संक्षेप में उत्तर
उत्तर
- Even after India got its freedom, Sikkim stayed a protectorate. India was in charge of defense and foreign relations, and the Chogyal, Sikkim's monarch, ran the country's internal affairs. Nepal's mostly Nepali population wanted democracy, which made them unhappy with the Chogyal's rule. Anti-Chogyal leaders got help from India, which made people even more unhappy.
- In the first democratic elections, which were held in 1974, the Sikkim Congress won and pushed for a merger with India. The assembly then asked to become an associate state, and in 1975, it was approved by a vote as a full member of the union. Sikkim became the 22nd state when the Indian Parliament quickly agreed. The Chogyal and their allies fought against the merger, but most people in Sikkim agreed with it because they didn't want to see politics split up.
