  Autogamy (Self-pollination)   Xenogamy (Cross pollination)
1. Self-pollination occurs when a bisexual bloom is pollinated by its own pollen grains. 1. The pollen grains from the anther are transferred to the stigma of another flower of the same species during cross-pollination.
2. External pollinators are not required for self pollination. 2. Cross pollination depends upon external agents for pollination.
3. Self-pollination is cost-effective since pollen grains are not wasted. 3. Cross-pollination is not cost-effective since pollen grains are wasted during transfer.
4. Offspring have genetic similarities with their parents. e.g. Pea. 4. Because of recombination, offspring are genetically diverse. For example, maize and rice.
