Certain cells in the gastrointestinal mucosa have an endocrine function. These cells create hormones that are essential in digestion processes and the flow of digestive juices.
Gastrin: This hormone induces the production of gastric juice by the gastric glands.
Secretin: This hormone is in charge of pancreatic juice and bile secretion from the pancreas and liver.
Cholecystokinin (CCK): stimulates gall bladder to stimulates the pancreas enzymes. This hormone causes bile to be released.
Gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP): It slows stomach contractions and inhibits gastric juice release.
