1. Methane and carbon dioxide are two major gases produced from the decomposition of the organic fraction of solid waste in the landfill. Methane gas (CH₄) has a 21-fold global warming potential compared to carbon dioxide (Co₂). Landfills have been implicated as the largest source of atmospheric methane in the world, leading to a natural phenomenon called "global warming".
2. A soluble solution that originates from the landfill or garbage containing harmful substances percolates down the soil and reaches the ground water, is called lechate.
