प्रश्न

Explain any two shortcomings of the SAARC as a regional organization.

संक्षेप में उत्तर

उत्तर

The following are some of the SAARC's perceived shortcomings as a regional organization:

  1. The conflict between India and Pakistan: The tensions between India and Pakistan have done significant damage to the SAARC and have hampered the region's growth and development. These two countries are South Asia's dominant powers. The Kashmir dispute between these countries has become a significant impediment to its progress, as complications resulting from Indo-Pak tensions have a negative impact on the organization.
  2. The poor trade cooperation and performance of the SAARC: SAARC members signed the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA), which promised the creation of a South Asian free trade zone. SAFTA aims to reduce trade tariffs. Despite the passage of SAFTA, it has been unable to increase trade between member countries. Some of our neighbours, however, are concerned that SAFTA will allow India to 'invade' their markets and influence their societies and politics through commercial ventures and a commercial presence in their countries. Tensions among member states allow external powers to intervene in South Asian politics. China and the United States continue to play important roles in South Asian politics.
