- To correct imbalances in scientific and technological manpower that exist because 90% of trained manpower is concentrated in the industrialised countries.
- It encourages basic research in the fields of mathematics, physics, geology, hydrology, environment and biotechnology. It promotes awareness and interaction between science and technology. As a result, it finances engineering and technology schemes in a number of developing countries.
- It also promotes the social sciences as an instrument for the realisation of human rights, justice and peace.
Thus, by promoting education and the spread of science, UNESCO makes a move in the direction of instilling peace in the hearts of people, into their private and public ambitions and daily lives.
