प्रश्न
Explain the magnetic properties of d-block (or transition) elements.
संक्षेप में उत्तर
उत्तर
- Due to the existence of one or more unpaired electrons in their (n - 1) d orbitals, the majority of transition metal ions and their compounds are paramagnetic. As a result, they are drawn to the magnetic field.
- The paramagnetic property and magnetic moment rise as the number of unpaired electrons in d orbitals increases from 1 to 5.
- The diamagnetic transition elements and their ions, which have all of their electrons coupled, are attracted by the magnetic field.
- Metals like Fe, Co and Ni possess very high paramagnetism and acquire permanent magnetic moment hence they are ferromagnetic.
