Lord Wellesley established the Subsidiary Alliance system to establish the British government's authority over Indian territories.

  1. The British guaranteed protection to the native rulers under its terms. The native rulers were required to maintain an army under British command, and the cost of doing so was to be borne by them.
  2. The British Resident would live in the Rajas' kingdom of India, and all matters concerning defence and foreign affairs would be communicated to him first.
  3. The Indian kingdoms could not enter into treaties with other European powers unless the British Resident was informed.
