Following are some steps that can be taken to combat deforestation.

1. The first and foremost step would be to stop deforestation.
2. Afforestation which means to plant trees especially in the areas where the trees have been cut down.
3. Community forestry programmes which involve the local people in forest conservation programme help in increasing the forest cover.
4. Practicing Joint forest management in partnership with local people conserves the forests.
5. Banning the practice of slash and burn also known as jhuming where a piece of forest is burnt to grow crop and then abandon after a few years when the land becomes unproductive.
6. Celebrating Vanamahotsav , the tree planting festival to drive tree consciousness amongst people.
7. Using alternatives of fuel wood, timber and other wood products.
8. Avoiding the use of forest for other land use like agriculture, building dams, roads, railways, industries, mining etc.
