Explain two merits and two demerits of a multi-party system.

Merits of the multi-party system are as follows :

• It gives representation to various opinions and interests. It is in accordance with the principles of democracy as voters get ample choice to select their representatives.
• There is no chance of cabinet dictatorship.

Demerits of the multi-party system are as follows:

• It is chaotic due to the presence of several parties. The government formed may or may not achieve the majority because of the presence of multiple optional which results in weaker government.
• It is considered to be a source of political instability.
