प्रश्न
Give reasons for the following:
Sulphur in vapour state shows paramagnetic behaviour.
उत्तर
The paramagnetism in Sulphur in the vapour phase can be explained from the fact that in the vapour phase, S2 is the dominant species and is therefore paramagnetic like O2, which has two unpaired electrons.
So like O2 molecule, S2 also has two unpaired electrons in the π*px and π*py orbital.

3.795 g of sulphur is dissolved in 100g of CS2. This solution boils at 319.81 K. What is the molecular formula of sulphur in solution? The boiling point of CS2 is 319.45 K. (Given that Kb for CS2 = 2.42 K kg mol-1 and atomic mass of S = 32)
Give reasons Dioxygen is a gas while Sulphur is a solid at room temperature.
How do you prepare:
Na2Cr2O7 from Na2CrO4?
Assertion: Both rhombic and monoclinic sulphur exist as S8 but oxygen exists as O2.
Reason: Oxygen forms pπ – pπ multiple bonds due to small size and small bond length but pπ – pπ bonding is not possible in sulphur.
α and β forms of sulphur are at equilibrium at a temperature known as ______.
Name two allotropes of sulphur.
Draw structure of sulphur molecule (Rhombic sulphur). Mention bond angle and bond length.
