Fossil fuels are the primary source of air pollutants. The following air pollutants are produced as a result of the combustion of fossil fuels.

Sulphur oxides: Sulphur is present in fossil fuels. Sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide are produced during burning. In the environment, these oxides react to generate sulphuric acid and sulphurous acid. These acids are damaging to the marble and erode it.

Carbon oxides: Fossil fuels emit carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Both are carcinogenic gases.
