How mass defect is related to the stability of the nucleus?

Nuclear binding energy and the size of the mass defect are inversely correlated and both numbers represent the stability of the nucleus. A nucleus is more stable than its isolated components, much as a molecule is more stable (lower in energy) than its individual atoms.
