To signal an obstruction in field hockey, the umpire will follow this procedure:
- To stop play, blow the whistle.
- Raise one arm straight up, palm open, to signal that a blockage has occurred.
- The umpire will then gesture his arm in the direction of the team that has been given the free hit.
