प्रश्न
Is it correct to say that photosynthesis occurs only in leaves of a plant? Besides leaves, what are the other parts that may be capable of carrying out photosynthesis? Justify.
उत्तर
If the part of the plant is green in colour then photosynthesis can occur in that part also. So, it is false to say that photosynthesis happens only in the leaves of a plant. Most of the other plant parts are capable of carrying out photosynthesis. Some examples are the following:
- Roots, Trapa, and Tinospora have chlorophyll and they carry out photosynthesis.
- In Opuntia, the stem is altered into a fleshy green pattern, and leaves are altered into thorns to curtail transpiration. In these plants, photosynthesis takes place in the stem. The modified stem of Opuntia is called phylloclade.
- In many plants, sepals are green in colour and carry out photosynthesis.
