दीर्घउत्तर

उत्तर

Bacillus thuriengiensis is a microorganism that produces the bt toxin. These bacteria produce intracellular crystal structures known as endotoxin during the sporulation process, which contains an insecticidal protein. Because the endotoxin that builds up in the bacteria is an inactive precursor, bt toxin kills the insect that consumes it but not the bacterium that makes it. Only the alkaline stomach of insects can activate it. By attaching to the interior of the insect's midgut, the protoxin damages the surface barrier by causing holes that result in swelling and lysis. This damage is done by the protoxin being cleaved by proteases (alkaline conditions in the gut) when the insect ingests it. As a result, the insect is unable to consume and dies from starvation.

Insects in the Lepidopteran group lay eggs on maize crops. The larvae on hatching feed on maize leaf and tender cob. In order to arrest the spread of three such Lepidopteran pests, Bt maize crops were introduced in an experimental field.
A study was carried out to see which of the three species of lepidopteran pests was most susceptible to Bt genes and its product.
The lepidopteran pests were allowed to feed on the same Bt-maize crops grown on 5 fields (A-E).
The graph below shows the leaf area damaged by these three pests after feeding on maize leaves for five days.
