प्रश्न
State with reason whether you agree or disagree with the following statement:

उत्तर
I disagree with the given statement.
Reason:
Under exceptional circumstances, consumer buys more when the price of commodity rises and buys less when price of commodity falls. Such exceptions to the law of demand are as follows:
Such exceptions to the law of demand are as follows:
- Giffen’s paradox: There is a direct relationship between price & quantity demanded in case of inferior goods or low-quality goods.
- Speculation: The law of demand does not hold true when people expect the prices to rise still further. In this case, although the prices have risen today, consumers will demand more in anticipation of further rise in the price.
- Habitual goods: If a person is habituated or addicted to certain goods, his demand for these goods will continue to be the same even if the price of such goods rises.
- Illusion of price: Consumers may believe that high priced goods are of better quality and therefore, demand for such goods tends to increase with increase in their prices.
- Prestige goods: Rich people may demand more of prestige goods when their prices rise so that they can show-off.
- Fashion: A product which is in fashion will have a high demand even if the price rises.
- Ignorance: Sometimes people buy more of a commodity at high prices when they are not aware about the price of the commodity at other places.
- Necessities: The demand for certain necessities like basic foodstuffs will not change due to a change in their prices.
