Modern Western liberalism and a fresh perspective on classical literature gave rise to the social reforms of the 19th century. Raja Ram Mohan Roy criticised Sati on the basis of natural rights and humanitarian efforts with regard to women. Ranade raised the subject of widow remarriage by bringing up the shastric penalties. Reformers worked for modernised, liberalised education that was influenced by the European Renaissance, Reformation, and Enlightenment and improved the education of girls.
