Some antibiotics are useful against a wide variety of bacteria. They are called broadspectrum antibiotics. Examples are ampicillin, amoxicillin, tetracycline, etc. When the pathogen cannot be identified even though the symptoms of the disease are visible, broad-spectrum antibiotics are used.
