प्रश्न

What do the terms phycobiont and mycobiont signify?

संक्षेप में उत्तर

उत्तर

  1. A lichen is a structurally ordered organism made up of an alga and fungus that are permanently associated. Mycobiont refers to the fungal component of lichens, while phycobiont refers to the algal component.
  2. Alga and fungus coexist in a symbiotic union in which the fungus is the dominant partner and the alga is the subordinate one. The fungus provides the structural covering that shields the alga from adverse environmental factors, including heat, drought, and other environmental stresses. In addition, it holds atmospheric moisture in place and secures the lichen to rocks, tree bark, leaves, and other such materials.
  3. Through the process of photosynthesis, algae convert carbon dioxide into organic food. In addition to preparing food, cyanobacteria, sometimes known as blue-green algae, fix atmospheric nitrogen.
