When nitric acid is added to washing soda carbon dioxide will form which when passed through a freshly prepared lime water, turns lime water milky.
\[\ce{Na2CO3 + 2HNO3 -> 2NaNO3 + H2O(I) + CO2}\]

\[\ce{Ca(OH)2 + CO2 -> CaCO3 + H2O}\]
