प्रश्न

What happens when white phosphorus is heated with concentrated NaOH solution in an inert atmosphere of CO2?

उत्तर

White phosphorous dissolves in boiling NaOH solution (in a CO2 atmosphere) to give phosphine, PH3.

`P_4 + 3NaOH + 3H_2O -> PH_3               +    3NaH_2PO_2`

                                             Phosphine            Sodium hypophosphite
