Polyp and medusa are the two body types of cnidarians. Polyps are the sessile forms, whereas medusa is the free-swimming form. Some cnidarians have generations that alternate between polyp and medusa forms, with one generation in polyp form and the next in medusa form. Metagenesis is the term for this phenomenon.
