Why is the Presidential election in 1969 in India considered 'Historical'?

संक्षेप में उत्तर

उत्तर

The formal split in Congress occurred in 1969 on the issue of candidate nomination during presidential elections:

  • Despite Indira Gandhi's reservations, the Syndicate chose Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy as the official Congress candidate for the forthcoming Presidential elections. Indira Gandhi responded to the situation by encouraging Mr. V.V. Giri, the then-Vice President, to run as an independent candidate.
  • During the election, then-Congress President S. Nijalingappa issued a whip in which he asked all Congress MPs to vote. MLAs are expected to vote for N. Sanjeeva Reddy.
  • After silently supporting V.V. Giri, Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi openly called for a conscience vote so that people could vote the way they wanted.
  • Because of this diplomatic effort, V.V. Giri won the elections, and N. Sanjeeva Reddy was defeated.
  • The defeat of the formal Congress candidate, N. Sanjeeva Reddy, formalised the party's split into two:
    (a) Congress (O), a syndicate-led organization known as Old Congress.
    (b) Congress (R), also known as the New Congress, is a group of requisitionists led by Indira Gandhi.
