The process of conversion of iron into its hydrated form of oxide in the presence of air and moisture (humid atmosphere) is called rusting. Rust is hydrated ferric oxide.
4Fe + 3O₂ → 2Fe₂O₃
Fe₂O₃ + X H₂O → 2Fe₂O₃ . X H₂O
(X = Number of water molecules which is variable).
