1. The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear reactor accident in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the former Soviet Union (now Northern Ukraine).
2. It was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, resulting in a severe release of radioactivity into the environment following a massive power excursion that destroyed the reactor.
3. On 25th April 1986, reactor number four at the Chernobyl plant exploded.
4. The explosion was so severe that it formed a huge cloud of radioactive material in the atmosphere over an extensive geographical area.
5. Further explosions and the resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere.
6. It is estimated that the impact of this explosion was four hundred times more than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
7. The worst affected countries were Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. It was estimated that more than 60 per cent of the radioactive material from the cloud landed in Belarus.
8. The cloud formed after the explosion drifted over extensive parts of entire Europe and up to eastern North America.
9. Ireland also received mild nuclear rain. Around 336,000 people were evacuated and resettled in other areas.
10. From this radioactive material, the adjoining Pripyat River was also contaminated. The entire aquatic life of the river was destroyed.
