- Linguism is a form of excess loyalty towards one’s own language. It has its origin in the linguistic division of states and the linguistic minorities within the state.
- In every state, there is one dominant regional language. Along with this, there are other large sections speaking regional languages and dialects. They constitute the linguistic minorities.
- In linguism, people of one language try to establish their language over others, leading to conflicts.
- If linguistic minorities feel that their interests are being disregarded and their welfare ignored, it is harmful to national unity and solidarity.
- Today, linguism has acquired seriousness and intensity in India. It has led to linguistic nationalism which could result it separatism.
- The notion of Hindi as an official language of the union does not find complete acceptance across the country. In many parts within India, especially South and some North Eastern States, Hindi is largely unspoken.
- The hounding of people who speak languages other than the dominant language and the atrocities committed on linguistic minorities are well-known.
- The underrepresentation of tribal dialects and minority languages as well as decline in the study of literature of various languages is also a matter of concern.
