The word to which a prefix or suffix is added is called a root or root word.

• -ful (means full of):

  2. Hope → Hopeful (full of hope)

• -ly (turns adjectives into adverbs):

  1. Quick → Quickly (in a quick manner)

  2. Action (Suffix: -ion → meaning process or act)
