1. The king’s position was increasingly shaky. He was not able to reconcile to the legislations passed by the National Assembly. He decided to escape from Paris.
2. Dressing as a valet, he escaped along with his family to Varennes, a border town.
3. But he was recognized there by a postman and was arrested by the National Guards.
4. He was brought back to Paris where he remained Paris virtually a prisoner.
