Amino acids that cannot be synthesised in the human body and must be obtained through diet are known as essential amino acids.

Essential amino acid is those amino acids that cannot be synthesised inside our body. They need to be supplied in our diet. For example, valine, histidine, leucine, tryptophan etc. Out of total 20 amino acids, only 10 cannot be synthesized by the body and hence, there are 10 essential amino acids.
