Steps taken by Indira Gandhi to remove poverty:

  1. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi began a series of attempts to shift government policy toward the left. In May 1967, she persuaded the Congress Working Committee to endorse a Ten Point Programme.
  2. This policy comprised social control of banks, nationalization of General Insurance, city property and income limits, public distribution of food grains, land reforms, and the supply of rural poor housing.
  3. She emphasized the expansion of the public sector, the enforcement of limits on rural landholdings and urban property, the elimination of income and opportunity inequities, and the repeal of royal privileges.
  4. Indira Gandhi's 'Garibi Hatao' slogan attempted to inspire support among the poor, particularly among landless labourers, Dalits and Adivasis, minorities, women, and unemployed youth.
  5. Indira Gandhi's political strategy of developing an independent nationwide political support base included the Garibi Hatao slogan and the following programs.
