प्रश्न

Discuss the nature of solutions of the following system of equations

2y + z = 3(– x + 1); – x + 3y – z = – 4; 3x + 2y + z = `-1/2`

उत्तर

2y + z = 3 (– x + 1)

2y + z = – 3x + 3  ...(1)

3x + 2y + z = `-1/2`

– x + 3y – z = – 4

x – 3y + z = 4   ...(2)

3x + 2y + z = `-1/2`

Multiply by 2  6x + 4y + 2z = – 1   ....(3)
                         3x + 2y + z = 3     ....(1)
                           x – 3y + z = 4      ....(2)
                         (–)  (+)  (–) (–)
(1) – (2) ⇒        2x + 5y + 0 =  – 1
                               2x + 5y = – 1   ....(4)
(1) × 2 ⇒         6x + 4y + 2z = 6     ....(1)
(3) × 1 ⇒         6x + 4y + 2z = – 1  ....(3)
                        (–)    (–)    (–)   (+)
(1) – (3) ⇒         0 +  0  +  0 = 7

Hence we arrive at a contradiction as 0 ≠ 7

This means that the system is inconsistent and has no solution.
