Aspects of Attention:
- Span of Attention: It is the entire quantity of stimuli that we can become acutely aware of in a single glance. It is severely limited. Adults attention spans range from 7 to 8 numbers or alphabets. Age, intelligence, practice, experience, habits, and other factors can all influence attention span.
- Distraction of Attention: After focusing on one stimulus, attention shifts to another due to external or internal disruptions. This is an example of attention divertissement. Many environmental elements, such as the intensity, size, movement, etc. of stiinuli, might divert attention. For example, while studying, you become distracted by a film tune. Internal variables such as a disordered bodily or psychological state, a lack of interest, or a mental set can also cause attention to be diverted. For example, if you have a stomach discomfort, your attention may be diverted.
- Division of Attention: People who are doing two things at the same time, such as reading a newspaper while eating or knitting while watching TV. Individuals cannot divide their attention between two things at the same time because one activity is performed mechanically and the other task with full focus. When a person focuses on both jobs at the same time, mistakes increase, efficiency decreases, confusion arises, etc. For example, if a person is requested to read a newspaper while also threading a necessity, he will be unable to do so without making a mistake.
- Fluctuation of Attention: Attention continues to oscillate like a clock pendulum. We can't focus on a single stimulus for an extended amount of time. Attention is diverted to another stimulus for a brief moment before returning to the original stimulus. This is referred to as attention fluctuation. Factors such as exhaustion, lack of interest, attractiveness of other stimuli, and so on can cause attention to shift. For example, when you pay attention to the teacher, your focus temporarily goes to a friend sitting beside you before returning to what your teacher is teaching.
