1. Purpose of Operation Iraqi Freedom: Since Iraq's war and attempted annexation of Kuwait in 1990, the United States has pressed Iraq on a variety of topics. The United States invaded Iraq on March 19, 2003, under the guise of "Operation Iraqi Freedom," with the overall goal of deposing Saddam Hussein. After the UN refused to approve the invasion, more than 40 countries joined the US-led "Coalition of the Willing." The primary purpose of the invasion, as well as its secret goal, was to prevent Iraq from developing chemical weapons, which are classified as "WMDs." The UN refused to give this topic a mandate after its observers failed to find any proof of weapons in Iraq. Yet the United States was resolute on attacking Iraq, and it is speculated that the invasion was motivated by other objectives such as controlling the country's oil wealth and imposing an American-friendly government.
2. Consequences:
   • The US forces suffered over 3000 casualties throughout the battle, whereas Iraqi casualties were significantly higher.
   • 50,000 Iraqi civilian deaths have been estimated since the US-led invasion. As a result, an entire insurgency against the US occupation of Iraq was begun. It was a military and political defeat.
