प्रश्न

Give reasons for the following:

Measurement of osmotic pressure method is preferred for the determination of molar masses of macromolecules such as proteins and polymers.

उत्तर १

There are many reasons

1) Osmotic pressure can be measured at room temperature whereas other colligative properties need either high temp or low temp conditions.

2) Most of the macromolecules get denatured in high temp, this can be avoided.

3) Values of other colligative properties is very small that a small error can account to the large difference.

उत्तर २

The osmotic pressure method has the advantage over other methods as pressure measurement is around the room temperature and the molarity of the solution is used instead of molality. Also as compared to other colligative property its magnitude is large even for dilute solution.

Calculate the mass of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C, C6H8O6) to be dissolved in 75 g of acetic acid to lower its melting point by 1.5°C. Kf = 3.9 K kg mol−1.

Calculate the freezing point of a solution containing 60 g of glucose (Molar mass = 180 g mol–1) in 250 g of water. (Kf of water = 1.86 K kg mol–1)

Assertion: When NaCl is added to water a depression in freezing point is observed.

Reason: The lowering of vapour pressure of a solution causes depression in the freezing point.

Depression of freezing point in any dilute solution is directly proportional to ______
