Non-alignment was necessary during the Cold War.

The Non-Alignment was an important political movement during the Cold War period which encouraged conflict resolution through peaceful means.  It was an initiative of Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito. In a scenario of growing unrest and the intense arms race, the non-aligned movement inspired the developing nations to come together for cooperation and economic growth. It was necessary to bring together the newly decolonized countries and assert their sovereignty in the face of global rivalry which was taking a neo-imperial shape. As an organization of states who did not seek to align themselves either with the Soviet Union or the United States, but remained independent. Ultimately the Cold War came to an end after this.
