Describe briefly the role of Birsa Munda in this rebellion.

Birsa Munda gave an impetus to the movement by declaring himself as the messenger of God. He claimed that he had a prophecy and promised a supernatural solution to the problem of the Munda people. The Munda leaders utilised the cult of Birsa Munda to recruit more people to their cause. A series of night meetings were held and subsequently a revolt was planned.
