Edla and Saheb were both given presents; the peddler gave Edla a rattrap, while Saheb got a pair of used tennis shoes. By letting the peddler spend Christmas Eve at their manor, Edla showed a great deal of trust. She was saddened by the robbery news, though. She was overjoyed to find the package and letter the peddler had left when she got home. She was delighted by the peddler's gesture of thanks.
Saheb was given a pair of tennis shoes by a wealthy boy who had thrown them away since one of them had a hole in it. Saheb's desire of wearing tennis shoes is realised, and he is ecstatic as he inspects the shoes.
Edla and Saheb feel delight for various reasons and in different situations. Saheb's joy is simple, stemming from the realisation of a personal dream, whereas Edla's delight is complex, entwined with empathy and a deeper understanding. Both tales demonstrate the variety of ways people can find happiness, whether it be by deeds of kindness or the accomplishment of their own goals.
