Solving equations and (i) and (ii) simultaneously we get,

Now, substitute value of x in equation (i) we get
−1 − 3y = 7
⇒ −3y = 7 + 1
⇒ −3y = 8
∴ y = `(−8)/3`
Hence, x = −1 and y = `(−8)/3`
