In 1817, German scientist Dobereiner proposed that the properties of elements are connected to their atomic masses. He defined triads as groups of three elements with comparable chemical properties. He grouped the three elements in a triad with increasing atomic mass and found that the middle element's atomic mass was approximately equal to the mean of the other two.
