What is aqua regia?

A mixture of three parts of conc. $$\mathrm{HCl}$$ and one part of conc. $$\mathrm{HNO}{\phantom{A}}_3$$ is aqua regia. It gives nascent chlorine and can dissolve gold and platinum [noble metals].
