  1. Social forestry refers to the planting of trees, often with the involvement of local communities, in unused and fallow land.
  2. Social forestry is the afforestation of all lands other than crop lands that are available outside the forest areas or around agricultural fields with the purpose of meeting the requirements of ecological and environmental security and day to day needs of rural population.
  3. The term 'social forestry' was first used in India in 1976 by the National Commission on Agriculture.
  4. Social forestry is gaining more importance in developing countries and the idea has been adopted in other Asian countries also.
