1. Preparation centre: It is also known as the mixing centre. This is the place where all preliminary preparations are made before cooking the meal. There should be adequate space for the counter.
2. Cooking Centre: The cooking centre is designed for all kinds of cooking and serving hot food. It should not be away from the mixing and sink centres. Gas-range, stove, hob, etc., are the main equipment of this centre.
3. Washing or Sink Centre: Cleaning after meals is an equally important operation. This place is used for a number of operations: Dishwashing is done here; hence, the dishwashing equipment and materials should be kept here. The homemaker washes his/her hands here before cooking. It is also used for washing fruits, vegetables, pulses, etc., before consumption.
4. Serving Centre: Bigger kitchens solve two purposes: cooking and serving. If serving space is planned in the kitchen, adequate space should be provided. The serving centre can be a continuation of the cooking centre or a separate table may be provided near the cooking area.
5. Storage Centre: Adequate space should be provided near the preparation table, stove, and sink to keep groceries, cooking utensils, and cleaning materials. Larger units provide for sleek yet efficient storage solutions. Other storage can be in the form of shelves, drawers, cabinets, and wall cupboards.
