Why are infra-red waves often called heat waves? Explain.

Why are infrared waves often called heat waves? Given their one application.

उत्तर

Infrared waves are sometimes referred to as heat waves. This is because water molecules present in most materials readily absorb infrared waves (many other molecules, for example, CO2, and NH3, also absorb infrared waves). After absorption, their thermal motion increases, that is, they heat up and heat their surroundings.

Infrared waves are used in burglar alarms, security lights and remote controls for television and DVD players.

Name the subjective property of light related to its wavelength.

Consider a photon of continuous X-ray and a photon of characteristic X-ray of the same wavelength. Which of the following is/are different for the two photons?

Find the energy, the frequency and the momentum of an X-ray photon of wavelength 0.10 nm.

(Use Planck constant h = 4.14 × 10-15 eVs, speed of light c = 3 × 108 m/s.)

Iron emits Kα X-ray of energy 6.4 keV. Calculate the times taken by an iron Kα photon to cross through a distance of 3 km.

(Use Planck constant h = 4.14 × 10-15 eVs, speed of light c = 3 × 108 m/s.)

Continuous X-rays are made to strike a tissue paper soaked with polluted water. The incoming X-rays excite the atoms of the sample by knocking out the electrons from the inner shells. Characteristic X-rays are analysed and the intensity is plotted against the wavelength. Assuming that only Kα intensities are detected, list the elements present in the sample from the plot. Use Moseley's equation v − (25 × 1014Hz)(Z − 1)2.

(Use Planck constant h = 6.63 × 10-34 Js= 4.14 × 10-15 eVs, speed of light c = 3 × 108 m/s.)

An electromagnetic wave has a frequency of 500 MHz and a wavelength of 60 cm.
    1. Calculate the speed of the wave.
    2. Name the medium through which it is traveling.

Name the radiation which can be detected by thermopile.

Name the radiations used for the detection of fracture in bones.

What is the wavelength of the wave whose frequency is 1012 Hz? Name the electromagnetic wave.

Electromagnetic waves with wavelength

  1. λ1 is suitable for radar systems used in aircraft navigation.
  2. λ2 is used to kill germs in water purifiers.
  3. λ3 is used to improve visibility in runways during fog and mist conditions.

Identify and name the part of the electromagnetic spectrum to which these radiations belong. Also arrange these wavelengths in ascending order of their magnitude.
