Why did Cuba switch to organic farming?

- Cuban economy relied heavily on support from Soviet Union and were receiving all resources from them. During cold war, Cuba received subsidised oil, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and other farm products in exchange of sugar. Hence, they remained insensitive to the need for organic farming.
- This aid was stopped by the Soviet Union and Cuba faced a situation of crisis.
- It struggling to cope up with shortage of fuel, raw material and manufactured products.
- Therefore, Cuba had no option but to switch over to sustainable methods which were cheaper.
