प्रश्न

Why is sound wave called a longitudinal wave?

लघु उत्तर

उत्तर

When the displacement of the particles of the medium is parallel to the direction of wave propagation, it is called a longitudinal wave. Sound waves are propagated in the form of compression (C) and rarefaction (R) and the particles of the medium (air) move back and forth in the direction parallel to the propagation of the wave. Therefore, sound waves are called longitudinal waves.
