प्रश्न

With the help of one example, explain the phenomena of co-dominance and multiple allelism in human population.

उत्तर

Codominance: When both alleles of a pair are fully expressed in a heterozygote, the genes and trait are said to be codominant. Example: A person of blood group AB is an example of codominance where allele IA for A-type blood is codominant with its allele IB for B-type blood. The heterozygote (IAIB) expresses the characteristics of both A and B antigens.

Multiple allelism: It is a phenomenon which occurs when more than two alleles exist at a given locus of a chromosome. In a given individual, only two of these alleles occur, one derived from each parent. Example: The ABO blood typing in humans is an example of multiple allelism where alleles IA, IB and i produce the four phenotypes (A, B, AB and O) of blood groups.

During a monohybrid cross involving a tall pea plant with a dwarf pea plant, the offspring populations were tall and dwarf in equal ratio. Work out a cross to show how it is possible.

Two independent monohybrid crosses were carried out involving a tall pea plant with a dwarf pea plant. In the first cross, the offspring population has equal number of tall and dwarf plants, whereas in the second cross it was different. Work out the crosses and explain giving reasons for the difference in the offspring population.

What is the inheritance pattern observed in the size of starch grains and seed shape of Pisum sativum? Workout the monohybrid cross showing the above traits. How does this pattern of inheritance deviate from that of Mendelian law of dominance?

(a) Is this representation of the sequence of amino acids indicating a normal human or a sufferer from certain blood related genetic diseases? Give reasons in support of your answer.

(b) Why is the disease referred to as a Mendelian disorder? Explain.
